A Study on the Impact of KM Processes on New Product Development Performance

Abstract
New product development (NPD) is vital for a firm's daily operation and sustainable competitive advantages. NPD has become an important research topic because it is indispensible to a firm's survival and success since 1990s. Although the current NPD literature examines the impact of many factors on NPD performance, the impact of knowledge management on NPD has been largely ignored.Based on the literature review, this paper proposes a theoretical model to investigate the potential impact of knowledge management process on NPD performance. This study also analyzes the impact of knowledge management process on NPD performance, and the moderating of product innovation and environment turbulence on the relationship. Knowledge management involves a series of business processes. Managers can exploit these processes to form an effective mechanism for knowledge exchange and creation. Each knowledge management process involves many activities. We identify 12 key knowledge management activities based on a literature review of 25 salient KM studies. We derive three dimensions from these 12 KM activities: knowledge acquisition, creation, and combination. Ten hypotheses are proposed to investigate the causal relationships among these three KM dimensions, and the potential impact of each dimension on NPD performance. Our hypotheses also assess the moderating effect of product innovation and environmental turbulence on the causal relationship between KM dimensions and NPD performance. This study collects empirical data from 206 NPD project executed in 11 provinces in China. Analysis results indicate that knowledge acquisition and combination have positive effect on NPD performance, and environmental turbulence can moderate the causal relationship between KM processes and NPD performance. However, our hypothesized positive relationship between knowledge creation and NPD performance, and the moderating relationship of product innovation are not supportedOur empirical analyses lead to the following conclusions: A firm should ( 1) identify the knowledge demand for NPD, evaluate the existing knowledge, and create an environment to ease the knowledge acquisition process; ( 2 ) enhance the conversion of tacit and explicit knowledge at individual, team and inter-organization levels; (3 ) constantly assess environmental changes; and (4) promote NPD team creativity.关键词
