Adsorption Thermodynamics of Long Chain Alkylammoniums in the Interlayer of Montmorillonite

Abstract
Octadecyltrimethyl ammonium (OTA) was intercalated into Na-montmorillonite samples. The adsorption thermodynamics and interaction mechanism of the long carbon chain alkyl quaternary ammonium onto montmorillonite were discussed, based on the investigation of the isothermal adsorption of OTA in the interlayer of montmorillonite at different temperatures. The results indicate that the isothermal adsorption of OTA can be described by the Langrnuir and modified Langrnuir adsorption models, and the adsorption is a spontaneous exothermic reaction. The adsorption exhibited a physical adsorption. The amount of alkylammonium adsorbed in the montrnorillonite interlayer spacing decreased with increasing the adsorption temperature. The analysis by X-ray diffraction shows that the state of the adsorbed OTA evolves from "surface film" to "partition phase" when the loading increases.关键词
