Abstract

The prediction of gas-liquid two-phase flow patterns is fundamental for the design and process control of microfluidic systems. In this work, the flow patterns and boundaries of nitrogen gas and two miscible liquids (the aqueous surfactant solution and ethanol or acetone) in a rectangular microchannel (hydraulic diameter Dh=0.29 mm) with cross and T-shaped junctions were studied experimentally. Different flow patterns such as bubble flow, slug flow, churn flow and stratified flow, were observed by a visualization method at gas superficial velocities ranged from 0.012 to 22.391 ms"1 and the miscible liquids superficial velocities from 0.006 to 1.508 m·s-1. The depicted flow pattern maps were compared with the flow boundaries reported in the literatures. The obtained experimental values of flow pattern transitions were compared with the predictions given by the correlation reported in the literatures. A modified correlation was obtained by considering Weber number, which is available in the prediction of the transition from slug flow to churn flow under the present experimental conditions.
