Abstract

The start-up of hybrid anaerobic baffled reactor(ABR)-aerobic granulation process for berberine wastewater treatment was studied.The results showed that ABR could start up successfully under the conditions of HRT being 4 days and influent berberine concentration being 50 mg/L.After stabilization,the average MLSS of each compartment in ABR was 25 840 mg/L,21 560 mg/L,27 500 mg/L,11 200 mg/L,respectively.Aerobic granules were cultivated by the effluent from ABR.The stable granules with sizes of 2~10 mm,and settling velocity of 104~137 m/h were obtained after 80 days operation.The SVI value decreased from 120 to 20.34 ml/g during the granulation.The settling velocity of granular sludge over 104 m/h indicated that it had an excellent settling ability.In the final stage of the start-up process,the hybrid system could acquire stable removal efficiencies of COD about 90%~95% with an average influent COD concentration of 3 000~4 000 mg/L,and an average effluent of 168.4~271 mg/L.All these have proved that hybrid ABR-aerobic granulation reactor can treat berberine wastewater effectively.
