Abstract

A complete electromagnetic transient model of HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) system is built on the basis of PSCAD/EMTDC. A lot of typical faults for HVDC transmission system are simulated in the model. A large amount of typical fault information is extracted with the method of wavelet transform. When the faults occur inside and outside protection section of HVDC system, polarities of transient current and transition resistances affect transient current signal polarity identification, and the effect is analyzed. For two electrodes system, under the state of coupling relationship of voltage, the fault electrode is confirmed by voltage variation. A transient protection based on wavelet transform for HVDC transmission lines is proposed. Simulation results show that such protection criterion can detect fault locations accurately. It has high sensitivity for faults with high transition resistance, and its requirements are very low for communication channels.
