Abstract

Ontology as a conceptual modeling tool is applied to various computer fields, chiefly used to organize information and manage knowledge. Ontology extension is a method which is used to add a new concept and a relationship between concepts to a proper position inside an existing ontology in order to enlarge the ontology. The authors propose a method based on semantic relatedness between words for extending ontology from a text, which exploit co-occurrence analysis, word filtering technology and word semantic relatedness to find the potential concept,denoted as extended concept,from the text. They take advantage of extension rules and containment analysis to identify the relation between concepts and insert the extended concepts into the existing ontology. Take the education field, a sub-field of E-govemment,as an example,where they have used the proposed method to extend domain ontology of education. The results show that the extended ontology is more reasonable with more powerful application accommodation.
