Abstract

The LaserFace mechanical seal ( LF-MS) uses two sets of recesses in one of the sealing faces that can introduce fully lubrication film between the faces. Therefore, the working life of such a seal can be prolonged. It can be applied for almost all services in which the sealed mediums are clean liquids, especially suitable for sealing volatile mediums. In this paper, the theory of mixed lubrication is used to analyze the LaserFace lubrication modes. A two-dimensional Reynolds equation is presented and resolved by finite element method to get the fluid film pressure fields between the faces. The work mechanism of a LaserFace seal is disclosed by its pressure distribution and velocity fields of liquid film. The comparisons of sealing performance among two types of a LF-MS with equal or varied depths of ' return flow' ( RF) structures and a general face seal and a general face seal with ' entry flow* structures are performed. The results show that a LF-MS is possessed of excellent advantages that its hydrodynamic affect is better, axial film stiffness is higher and friction coefficient is lower than that of the other two types of seals. A LF-MS with variable RF structure depth performs better than that of a LF-MS with equal RF structure depth.
