Abstract
A new numerical method based on Euler and FW-H equations is developed for calculating rotor parallel blade-vortex interaction (BVI) noise. To preserve the convecting vortex without numerical dissipation) which is caused by numerical discretisation scheme and grid density, the prescribed vortex method is employed. The noise prediction is based on the well-known FW-H equation for acoustic pressure. A parametric study is performed to examine the effects of the vortex strength, miss-distance, rotor tip Mach number and vortex direction on BVI noise, taking the experimental Kitaplioglu model rotor with a parallel BVI as an example. The comparisons between the present calculations and available data are made to validate the method. The results show that increasing miss-distance is an effective approach to reduce BVI noise, and the sound pressure level (SPL) is in inverse proportion to the square of the miss-distance between the vortex and the blade when the miss-distance is greater than the core radius. Decreasing vortex strength changes only the magnitude of noise, not its impulsiveness.
