Abstract

Effects of two ecological earthworm species( Eiseniafoelida and Amynthas robustus) and sterile compost on the aging process of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in sterile soil were investigated in the present study. Concentrations of water-extractable PCP, ethanol-extractable PCP, humus-fixed PCP and earthworm-accumulated PCP were monitored during 42 days of incubation. The results showed that concentrations of water-extractable PCP decreased over time in control and sterile compost treatment during the aging process. The water- extractable PCP concentrations in the presence of earthworms decreased from day 0 to day 14, and then increased from day 14 to day 42, suggesting that the activity of earthworm could enhance soil PCP desorption, which might be related to their increasing effect on soil pH. After 42 days of incubation, transformation to humus-fixed PCP and removed PCP were significantly enhanced in two earthworm treatments, probably because the earthworm could increase the content of humus, strengthen the chemical reduction of PCP by organic acids excretion, and intestinal digestion in the gut of earthworm. In addition, significant higher concentrations of humus-fixed PCP and removed PCP were obtained in treatment with Amynthas robustus than that with Eisenia foetida, indicating that Amynthas robustus could improve soil PCP transformation and removal more effectively than Eisenia foetida. No significant influence on the PCP transformation in sterile soil was observed by the addition of sterile compost.
