Abstract
The French Lieutenant＇s Woman,a novel by John Fowles,British writer,describes people＇s inner feeling of anxiety,loss and depression in seeking for freedom in a ridiculous,ugly and cold Victorian society.Charles,hero of the novel,is a Victorian noble youth.He is not only very capable of adapting to the living environment of his controlling era,but also born with free will.Burdened with the shackles of the era,heart full of resentment and discontent,Charles is in a very awkward historic situation.After Charles met with Sarah,who yearned for freedom,his born but suppressed will for freedom was touched,ignited and eventually burn,and finally he takes the road of Sarah.At this point,Charles completed,under the constraints of the Victorian era,his spirit transformation from self-awareness,self-reflection to self-conquer and self-saving,and exceeded his time.关键词
