Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects of imbibition-slow dissolving nonoxynol-9 (NP-9) membrane on skin/mucosa irritation and bacteriostasis.Methods: In vivo rabbit skin/vaginal irritation test and in vitro bacteriostasis test were employed, with imbibition-slow dissolving NP-9 membran as test material, NP-9 membrane as positive control, and imbibition-slow dissolving membran without NP-9 as negative control.Results; The average skin irritation index by imbibition-slow dissolving NP-9 membrane was 0. The average irritation index of vaginal mucosal irritation test was 0. 7 by NP-9 membrane, and 0. 3 by imbibition-slow dissolving NP-9 membrane. In contact with imbibition-slow dissolving NP-9 membrane for 10 minutes, the bacteriostasis of staphylococcus aureus was observed. Five minutes of contact with the imbibition-slow dissolving NP-9 membrane resulted in a strong bacteriostasis of colibacillus and candidaalbicans. The NP-9 membrane had a weak bacteriostatic effect on colibacillus and staphylococcus aureus, but no bacteriostatic effect on candidaalbicans. The membrane matrix (without NP-9) had no antimicrobial effect.Conclusions: The imbibition-slow dissolving NP-9 membranes had no irritant effect on skin and its vaginal mucosal irritation was waker than that of NP-9 membrane. It had an obviously inhibitory effect on bacteria and fungi.关键词
