Abstract

To verify the effect of phosphorus on the speciation and distribution of aluminum in the roots,two buckwheat cultivars(Jiangxi buckwheat,Al resistant cultivar;and Neimeng buckwheat,Al sensitive cultivar) differing in Al resistance were used to compare Al tolerance between cultivars.Additionally,the total Al content,monomeric Al content in roots and Al distribution in root tips were measured as indicators of the effect of phosphorus on Al.Compared to a single Al treatment,phosphorus pretreatment increased relative root length by 24.4% and 35.9%,decreased the total Al content by 18.2% and 22.5%,and also reduced monomeric Al content by 95% and 63.2%,in Jiangxi and Neimeng cultivars,respectively.The cell walls of root tips with the exposure of Al showed a stronger fluorescence than those with phosphorus pretreatment.These results suggested that the phosphorus tended to transfer the Al speciation from phytotoxic forms to non-phytotoxic forms due to decrease the content of total Al and monomeric Al,and reduced the Al accumulation in cell wall,thus ameliorated Al-induced root growth inhibition,thereby promoted Al tolerance in buckwheat.
