Abstract

It has been investigated that desulfurization systems of coal-fired power stations could play an important role in mercury removal. An overview of mercury removal performances and mercury removal mechanisms of three common desulfurization systems was presented. The limestone wet flue-gas desulfurization (WFGD) could remove most of the oxidized mercury, but had little effect on elemental mercury, sometimes even leads to an increase of elemental mercury in treated flue gas. The average mercury removal rate is 51%. The circulating fluidized bed(CFB) has a good performance in converting most of the mercury to paniculate mercury which could easily be removed by electrostatic precipitator(ESP)with the corresponding overall removal rate at 80%~99%. The new integrated desulfurization(NID)technology systems could not only remove oxidized mercury, but also had good ability in removing elemental mercury. The total removal rate of NID system is 84%~92%.
