Effect of ABA on papaya fruit ripening and its relation to ethylene

Abstract
The effect of ABA application on papaya fruit ripening and its relation to ethylene were investigated. The results showed that ethylene production increased with the fruit ripening and was the highest at 8 days after harvest. Fruit firmness declined sharply during ripening process. Exogenous ABA and ethephon application promoted the level of ethylene production, fruit firmness reduction, soluble solids accumulation and fruit color formation, accelerating fruit softening process. The NDGA as an ABA biosynthesis inhibitor reduced the level of ethylene production, soluble solids content and fruit color formation. Furthermore, adding either Co2+ or 1-MCP reduced fruit firmness, increased soluble solids accumulation and fruit color formation through inhibiting ABA but stimulating ethylene production. It can be concluded that the role of ABA on fruit ripening was mainly due to the ethylene evolution.关键词
