Abstract

With electromagnetic FEM, the apparent resistivity of unfavorable geological body in tunnel predicted by transient electromagnetic method was simulated, and the transient electromagnetic response features of unfavorable geological bodies such as faults or caves in apparent resistivity isoline map were studied. The results show that the isoline of apparent resistivity is relatively dense around the unfavorable geological bodies, while the isoline is relatively sparse inside the unfavorable geological bodies or around the rock. According to the size of apparent resistivity and the intensity of contour lines, the location and size of unfavorable geological bodies can be preliminarily judged. When there is a cave with abundant water in front of the tunnel face, the apparent resistivity is significantly lower and contour is intensive at the cave area. When there is a water-rich fault, the contour is intensive and regularly arranged pyramid low resistivity zone appears in the fault location. When there is a dry cave, the resistivity is significantly higher, and within high-resistivity area, there are several triangular combinations distributed. When there is a dry fault, the approximate straight line parallel apparent resistivity contours with intensive high resistivity appear in the fault location. The response characteristics of dry cave and dry fault are not easy to identify, which requires geological data to carry out more detailed analysis and judgment. Part of the above response characteristics have been applied and validated in some practical tunnel engineering.
