Utilization of mental health education and services among the migrant workers in Foxconn's Shenzhen factory

Abstract

Objective: To understand the utilization of mental health education and services and the related factors among migrant workers in Foxconn's Shenzhen factory. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on a sample of 1891 migrant workers. Data was collected by randomly sampling methods in two factory districts at foxconn's Shenzhen factory. All respondents were assessed with the self-made social demographic information questionnaire, Self-Rated Health Measurement Scale (SRHMS), Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ), knowledge of mental health questionnaire, attitude related mental illness questionnaire and self-made utilization of mental health education and services questionnaire, and the utilization of mental health education and services in one year were investigated. Results: The rate of the total utilization of mental health education and services among migrantworkers at Foxconn's Shenzhen factory in one year was 33. 2%. The top five modes of the utilization of mental health education and services in one year were mental health propaganda materials (18. 1%), psychological hotline (14.3%), psychological lectures (12.9%), special column on psychology (12.3%) and group discussion (11.7%). The five higher acceptance modes were mental health propaganda materials (72. 2 %), psychological lectures (66. 2%), psychological hotline (62. 1%), psychological courses education (58.6%) and volunteer service , activities (56. 1%). The psychological hotline (35. 2%) was the first choice when they had psychological problems. The migrant workers who took positive coping style (OR = 1. 09,P<0. 01) and had comprehensive mental health knowledge (OR = 1.31, P < 0.05) were more likely to utilize the mental health education and services. Conclusion: The migrant workers in Foxconn's Shenzhen factory have higher willing to accept the mental health education and services, but the utilization is lower. The public education about mental health knowledge a-mong migrant workers should be strengthened, and individual positive coping style should be developed.
