Optimum normal load when minimum wear loss of electrical sliding contact

Abstract
In order to understand the frictional characteristics of sliding electrical contact wear, and find out optimum operational conditions, taking a pantograph and catenary system to power supply as an example, this study investigates the impact of normal load on the tribological characteristics of pantograph plate and contact wear under electrical current. The experimental results show that with the increase of normal load, the wear loss of pantograph plate increases without electrical current. While with electrical current, however, it obviously shows different wearing characteristics: the wear loss of sliding plate decreases initially and then increases with the normal load increase, and the decrease rate is bigger than increase rate. At the mean time, the optimum normal load value is defined as the normal load when the wear loss is minimum. The optimum value increases with the increase of sliding velocity. When the normal load value is bigger than optimum load value, the main wear is mechanical wear. However, the main wear becomes electrical wear when normal load is less than optimum load value. The research result provides a useful guidance for studying normal load optimum value.关键词
