Abstract

This study investigated the removal of Cr ( Ⅵ) and As ( Ⅲ) from aqueous solutions by coaly activated carbon. The influences of Ph, temperature, contact time, and absorbent dosage on the adsorption of Cr ( Ⅵ) and As ( Ⅲ ) by coaly activated carbon were analyzed. The results show that Ph had a significant influence on the adsorption percentage, and the optimal Ph values for adsorption of Cr ( Ⅵ) and As (Ⅲ )were Ph 2.0 and Ph 5.0, respectively. The adsorption percentage of Cr ( Ⅵ) was affected significantly by temperature: the adsorption percentage of Cr ( Ⅵ ) ranged from 70% to 95% for temperatures increasing from 20℃ to 40℃. The adsorption percentage of As ( Ⅲ) increased with temperature at first, and then decreased, and the optimal temperature for the adsorption of As ( Ⅲ ) was 30℃. The experimental data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm equation, and the Pseudo-second-order model described adsorption kinetics well. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption of Cr ( Ⅵ ) and As ( Ⅲ ) was a spontaneous and endothermal process.
