Experimental Investigation of Chemical Looping Hydrogen Generation Using Iron Oxides as Oxygen Carrier

Abstract
Chemical looping hydrogen generation (CLHG) is a novel technology for hydrogen generation with inherent separation CO2. It consists of a fuel reactor, a steam reactor and an air reactor. CO was used as fuel gas to investigate the hydrogen generation. Three Fe-based oxygen carriers I.e., Fe2O3(90%)+Al2O3(10%)) Fe2O3(60%)+ A12O3 (40%) and Fe2O3(60%)+TiO2(40%) with A12O3 or TiO2 as inert support were prepared by mechanical-mixing method. The experiments were conducted at 900 ℃ with 10 redox cycles of reduction, steam oxidation and air oxidation. No deterioration or sintering of the oxygen carrier was observed. An increase in the mass fraction of inert support materials favored the reactivity of the oxygen carrier. The reactivity of the oxygen carrier using A12O3 was better than that using TiO2, which interacted with iron oxide forming FeTiO3. The hygroscopic property of inert support materials and the residual steam in the steam reactor led to agglomeration. At 600-900 ℃ , an increase in temperature favored deeper reduction of iron oxide in the reduction phase, leading to more hydrogen generation, and high temperature also suppressed carbon deposition in the reduction phase. During reduction, the conversion of fuel gas was constrained by thermodynamic equilibrium in a single-stage reactor and a novel fuel reactor was required for full conversion of fuel.关键词
