Abstract

To understand the relationship between shelf sedimentary system and slope sedimentary system in three order sequence stratigraphic framework of Miocene, the characteristics of shelf delta, slope complex channels and slope gravity flow deposit were studied. The results show that sea-level change, shelf break evolution, sediment supply and shelf marine hydrodynamics control the evolution of shelf and slope system. The SB 13.8 Ma is a sequence boundary in Hanjiang formation of Miocene in Pearl River Mouth Basin, in LST late of its phase the shelf-edge delta forms and delta front is on the shelf break areas in the north of Baiyun sag, the delta front develops and moves progradation quickly, and the shelf-edge grows toward slope. After that, delta front deposits controlled by shelf break, grade change and gravity factors become more and more unstable, and the above three factors make traction current change to gravity flow, by connecting of slope complex channels the deposits is loaded to the slope to generate slump, debris and turbidity fan. The whole process is the special source to sink system of the shelf and slope in the north of South China Sea. The sedimentary system is a transient, sudden and continuity process.
