Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effects of organic selenium and inorganic selenium supplement on pig growth performance. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from January 1988 to December 2010,which focused on the relationship between organic selenium or inorganic selenium, and pig growth performance, were selected and a meta-analysis was applied to estimate the combined standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI). A total of 15 RCTs with 362 subjects were included. Results of the meta-analysis showed that the combined SMD (95%CI) of feed:gain, average daily feed intake and average daily gain was -0.96(95%CI: -1.69, -0. 23) (P <0. 05), 0. 55(95%CI: 0. 16, 0. 93) (P<0.05) and 0.39(95%CI; 0.09, 0. 70) (p <0.05), respectively. In conclusion, compared with inorganic selenium, organic selenium can better reduce feed:gain, increase average daily feed intake as well as average daily gain, and consequentially improve pig growth performance.
