Abstract

The existence of space charge has an effect on the insulation breakdown properties of a liquid dielectric directly.To study the dynamic process of space charge,we proposed a high-speed charge couple device(CCD) system for space charge measurement in liquid dielectrics based on the Kerr electro-optic effect.The Kerr constant of propylene carbonate at room temperature was obtained using a high-speed photo-detector.Thus the electric field and space charge distribution between a pair of parallel-plate copper electrodes were measured with the high-speed CCD measurement system and the image processing technology.Experimental results show that space charge distributes between the parallel-plate copper electrodes as the pulsed high voltage reaches a certain value.The space charge distribution increases the electric field strength in the middle of two electrodes and decreases the electric field strength near the electrodes.Moreover,the effects of space charge distribution and transportation on the insulation characteristic of liquid dielectrics are analyzed.This study provides a basis for analyzing the generation mechanism of space charge and the influence of space charge distribution on the streamer discharge.
