Load-deflection characteristic and calculation of second-order effect of non-sway reinforced concrete columns

Abstract
It is important to evaluate the additional deflection of slender reinforced concrete columns precisely for analysis of ultimate bearing capacity and second-order effect of columns. For non-sway reinforced concrete columns, through dividing the column into segments with different rigidities and establishing the differential equations, a set of nonlinear equations expressed in terms of deflections of segments were derived based on the deformation compatibility between segments. By solving the equations, the deflections of segments and additional deflection of the column under each axial load step were obtained. The influences of eccentricity and slenderness on the bearing capacity and deflection of the columns were also analyzed. It is indicated that the bigger the eccentricity and slenderness are, the smaller the ultimate bearing capacity is and the greater the deflection is. The expressions for calculating the additional deflection of columns with symmetric eccentricity at ends and equivalent uniform moment diagram factor of columns with asymmetric eccentricity at ends were provided respectively. Comparison with the test data from different sources shows that the proposed expressions are better than those in the China code GB 50010--2010 and its counterpart of USA for design of concrete structures.关键词
