Abstract

Expansive soil is one of the key technological problems for the Yangtze River-Hanjiang River Water Transfer Project Based on numerous experimental investigations and analyses, the classification indicators and method for the expansive soils in this engineering area were determined using the comparative analysis. In order to reflect the characteristics of the uneven-distributed expansive soils, the expansibility of a single-layer soil was distinguished based on the rule of "one third sample" and the expansive soils in the canals were defined based on the rule of "one third thickness". Then, the macro geological features of the expansive soils were used for a rapid judgment of them in the field, which can guide the engineering construction. The above classification can provide the reliable and economical engineering treatments for the channels with different swelling potentials.
