Anti-proliferative activity of volatile oils extracted from Alpinia officinarum Hance on various carcinoma cell lines

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the inhibitory effect of volatile oils extracted from Alpinia officinarum Hance on proliferation of various carcinoma cell lines in vitro. Methods The volatile oils of Alpinia officinarum Hance was extracted by steam distillation, the proliferations and half inhibition concentration (IC50,) were observed by MTT assay in hepatocellu-lar carcinoma cell HepG2, colorectal carcinoma cell HT29, nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell CNE-2Z, thyroid carcinoma SW579 and cervical carcinoma cell Hela, which treated with different concentrations of volatile oils. Results The extraction efficiency of volatile oils extracted from Alpinia officinarum Hance was 1.2% , and the volatile oils inhibited the proliferation of HepG2, HT29, CNE-2Z, SW579 and Hela cells in concentration-dependent manner. The IC50 values of volatile oil against HT29, Hela, CNE-2Z, HepG2 and SW579 cells were 2 352, 717, 458, 431, 329 μg/mL respectively. Conclusion The volatile oil components from Alpinia officinarum Hance can inhibit the proliferation of various kinds of carcinoma cell lines to a certain degree.关键词
