A Simulation-Based Study on the Impacts of Decision-Making Behavior on Bullwhip Effect

Abstract
The bullwhip effect is one of the main reasons for inefficiencies in supply chain system. This paper addresses behavioral causes of the bullwhip effect for a multi-echelon supply chain system. Two more evaluation indexes are introduced to quantify human behavioral preference on bullwhip effect. They are named respectively as relative average surplus inventory level to represent decision-maker's attitude for holding cost of products, and relative average shortage inventory level to represent decision-maker's attitude or shortage penalty cost of products, the multi-echelon supply chain system is modeled and implemented on multi-agent simulation platform. Several typical scenarios are designed and run on the simulation platform, in which human behavioral influences decision-making are studied. The simulation results verify that decision-maker's behavior is a very important cause of bullwhip effect, even worsens the performance of the supply chain system.关键词
