Abstract
Objective To investigate the progression of lower urinary tract symptoms ( LUTS ) among old men in the community. Methods A total of 5 995 men aged 65 years old and above were selected from Guanghua Community and Changlong Community in Shenzhen. Both at the study entry and the end of two - year follow - up, they were surveyed with a questionnaire and their LUTS were evaluated with the American Urological Association - Symptom Index ( AUA - SI ). The subjects were divided into two groups according to their AUA - SI scores ( ≤7 and ≥8 ). The occurrence and progression rates of the two groups were calculated. Results The occurrence rate of LUTS was 28. 6% ( 883/3 092 ) and the progression rate was 23. 9% ( 622/ 2 605 ). A total of 2 200 patients with AUA - SI score ≤7 had never been treated for benign prostatic hypertrophy ( BPH ) or LUTS before the study. Among them, 94% had not sought for any treatment by the end of the follow - up, 2% had surgical treatment for BPH, and the other 4% had medication during the follow -up. Conclusion Within 2 years, LUTS occurred or progressed in about half of the old men in the community. This study will help elucidate the natural history of LUTS among old men in the community and provide evidence base for the clinical prevention and treatment of LUTS.关键词
