Abstract

Objective To analyze the influence of age at cochlear implantation, genders,rehabilitation time and educational programs on the vowel recognition ability and to explore thedevelopmental characteristics and rules of this ability in hearing-impaired children by assessing566 hearing-impaired children with cochlear implants aged 2-6. Methods The vowel recognition wordlists in the Auditory Assessment Standards and Methods for Hearing-impaired Children wereused to evaluate the auditory abilities of the subjects. This study adopted a three-factor (ageat cochlear implantation, gender, rehabilitation time) mixed experimental design with the vowelrecognition rate as the dependent variable. The assessment results were analyzed with theSPSS 16.0 software. Results The vowel recognition rate improved significantly with increasingrehabilitation time(P<0.001).The interactive effects of rehabilitation time and age on vowelrecognition ability were significant(P<0.001). The younger children showed more significantimprovement. The influence of gender on the vowel recognition ability was insignificant(P>0.05).Conclusion After cochlear implantation, the vowel recognition abilities of hearing-impairedchildren develops rapidly with increasing rehabilitation time and the younger the children, themore rapid the development. The vowel recognition abilities of the children can remain stablethrough at least 12 months of auditory reinforcement training, but the training time should exceedone year for the two-year-old group.
