Serum VEGF levels in patients with pancreatic cancer after chemotherapy with gemcitabine

Abstract
Objective To investigate serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in patients with pancreatic cancer patients after chemotherapy with gemcitabine. Methods Serum VEGF levels were measured by ELISA kit in 22 patients with pancreatic cancer before and after 6 cycles of chemotherapy with gemcitabine. The serum VEGF levels were compared between patients who responded to chemotherapy and those not responded. Results Serum VEGF levels of pancreatic cancer patients before gemcitabine therapy were higher than those of health subjects (P<0.01) ; the VEGF levels were declined after 3 cycles of chemotherapy (P<0.01) . After 6 cycles of chemotherapy the VEGF levels in patients with effective and objective tumor response were lower than those in patients who had no response (P<0.05). Conclusion The measurement of serum VEGF is helpful for follow-up after gemcitabine chemotherapy in patients with pancreatic cancer.关键词
