Clinical Effect of External Application of Furong Ointment in Treatment of Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Exit-Site Infection: A Report of 32 Cases

Abstract
Objective To observe the clinical effect of external application of Furong ointment (containing Folium Hibisci Mutabilis. as the main ingredient) in the treatment of peritoneal dialysis catheter exit-site infection. Methods Sixty-two patients with peritoneal dialysis catheter exit-site infection were randomly divided into control group (n=30) and treatment group (n = 32). The treatment group received therapy with Furong ointment that was externally applied to the exit site, while the control group received therapy with mupirocin ointment that was also externally applied to the exit site. In both groups, dressing change was performed once per day, and each course of treatment was two weeks. An exit-site scoring system was used to evaluate the exit-site infections before and after treatment. The numbers of cases with controlled infection and cases with secondary peritonitis were measured within one week. Results After treatment, both groups showed significantly decreased exit-site scores (P<0. 01) , and the treatment group had significantly lower scores than the control group (P<0. 01). There were no differences in numbers of cases with controlled infection and cases with secondary peritonitis between the two groups (P>0. 05). Conclusion The peritoneal dialysis catheter exit-site infection can be effectively treated with Furong ointment.关键词
