Abstract

Historic areas are usually characterized by abundant alleys and streets. Using these alleys and streets for micro-circulation is an important means to improve overall traffic conditions. This paper analyzes the functions and existing conditions of micro-circulation. The road network for micro-circulation is divided into two levels. The first level is the city-level network, which aims to service short distance travel. The second level is the neighborhood-level network, which airms to service the accessibility of neighborhoods. Based on such functional division, a double-layered planning method and corresponding traffic engineering solutions are proposed. In a addition, a case study of the old city of Nanjing is used to illustrate the prposed methodology.
