The Evolution of Urban Parks and Green Spaces in Xi＇an Contexts and Modes

Abstract
Urban parks and green spaces in Xi＇an are developing during Xi＇an＇s urbanization. With the changing connotations of ‘gardening’and ‘forestation’, the design and operation mode of urban parks and green spaces is evolving as well. Most of the parks are built on the relics and they reflect the characteristics of the layout of ancient Xi’an. This article explored five development phases of urban parks and green spaces in Xi’an since the foundation of New China. Urban parks and green spaces are evolving from the basic plantation to traditional gardens, from the new parks and gardens built on the relics to the decorative urban lawns and to green open spaces with taste of Tang Dynasty. The article also reviewed the influence of the different connotations of ‘gardening’ and ‘forestation’ to the form of urban parks and green spaces under contemporary context.关键词
