Abstract

Ir-Fe/C catalyst was prepared. The electrocatalytic activity of the Ir-Fe/C catalyst for the oxygen reduction and its methanol tolerance ability were investigated, based on the characterization with X-ray diffrac-tometer(XRD) and energy dispersive spectrometer( EDS). The results show that the onset potentials of the oxygen reduction at the Ir/C and Ir-Fe/C catalyst electrodes are 0.57 and 0.65 V, respectively, and the current densities at 0. 2 V are 4. 6 and 5. 8 mA/cm2, respectively. It indicates that the electrocatalytic activity of the Ir-Fe/C catalyst for the oxygen reduction is better than that of the Ir/C catalyst. In addition, the Ir-Fe/C catalyst possesses the high methanol tolerance ability. These results lay a strong basis for the use of the Ir-Fe/C cathodic catalyst in direct methanol fuel cell(DMFC).
