Abstract
Through featuring nature （the garden） as one protagonist and interpreting the relationship between nature and human beings, Hawthorne uncovered the deep-seated social problems behind ecological problems in one of his best short fictions Rappaccini＇s Daughter. Hawthorne＇s foresighted ecological consciousness coincides with the basic views of Murray Bookchin, the founder of American social ecolo- gy in 20th century. Hawthorne＇s transcendent ecological views still provide insight into the present glob- al ecological crisis.关键词
