Abstract

A series of sodium salt of styrene - maleic anhydride ( SMA) copolymer aliphatic alcohol monoesters were prepared by using styrene — maleic anhydride copolymer and higher aliphatic alcohols as starting materials. The grafted esterification products were characterized by 1HNMR and gel - permeation chromatography. Change of acid value of the materials before and after the esterification was measured as well as the water solubility and surface activity of the sodium salt of the esterification products were investigated. Results showed that conversion rate of the alcohols are all higher than 85%. The water - solubility of sodium salt of the grafted monoester obtained from lauryl alcohol ( SMA - g - C12) is better than that of the others. Sodium salt of SMA - g - C12 aqueous solution exhibits surface activity at 25 ℃ with a critical micelle concentration (cmc) of 0. 94 g · L-1 and γcmc of 25. 04 mN · m-1, which is the best among the products obtained from other higher aliphatic alcohols.
