Abstract

In order to analyze the glass forming ability and thermal stability of Al-Ni-Y ternary alloys,the melt quenching method was used to prepare the Al90Ni2Y8,Al87Ni5Y8,Al84Ni8Y8 and Al80Ni12Y8 alloy ribbons.The structures of both as-quenched and partially crystallized ribbons were characterized with x-ray diffraction(XRD),and the glass transition and crystallization behavior of the alloys were analyzed with differential scanning calorimeter(DSC).The results show that as-prepared ribbons are fully amorphous except for the Al80Ni12Y8 and Al90Ni2Y8 alloys,and the aluminum nanocrystals precipitate after partial crystallization.The glass transition temperature(Tg) can be clearly observed on the DSC curve of Al84Ni8Y8 alloy.With the comparison in the thermal stability of four alloys,it is found that with increasing the content of Ni,the primary crystallization temperature(Tx) of the alloys increases,and the thermal stability of the alloys gets enhanced.
