The Defamiliarization in Eliot＇s Poem The Waste Land

Abstract
Although the use of defamiliarization in The Waste Land increases the formal beauty of the poem, it makes the poem more difficult to understand. The writer of The Waste Land, T.S.Eliot, mainly employs two kinds of defamiliarization： linguistic device and nonlinguistic technique. The former includes the inversion of stanzas of poems written in foreign languages, addition of limericks and nursery rhymes, and unreasonable questions raised by the characters of the poem. The latter consists of citation of materials of various subjects and words used in a contradictory way. By exploring the use of linguistic devices and nonlinguistic techniques, readers can overcome the reading difficulties caused by defamiliarization and better appreciate the beauty the poem creates.关键词
