Effects of low frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields on the serum osteoprotegerin and nuclear factor-kappa beta ligand receptor activator in postmenopausal osteoporosis patients

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Pulse electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) can overcome the defects of the traditional treatment and have the treatment function to osteoporosis causing pain, bone mass and bone mineral density reducing. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of low frequency PEMFs on the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. METHODS: 150 postmenopausal women were selected to measure the lumbar bone mineral density by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry based on the WHO standard. The results showed there were 50 cases of no osteoporosis and 100 cases of osteoporosis. The patients with osteoporosis were randomly divided into osteoporosis group and low frequency PEMFs group; the patients in these two groups were treated with oral calcium or oral calcium+14 days consecutive low frequency PEMFs. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Baseline materials in three groups were comparative. Women without osteoporosis showed higher levels of bone mineral density than women with osteoporosis (P < 0.01), and were not changed after treated with low frequency PEMFs (P> 0.05), but, the level of serum p-CrossLaps was significantly decreased (P< 0.05), the level of bone gamma-carboxyglutamic-acid-containing proteins was significantly increased (P< 0.01). Compared with osteoporosis group, the level of serum osteoprotegerin was significantly increased in no osteoporosis group and low frequency PEMFs group (P < 0.05) and the level of serum osteoprotegerin, nuclear factor-kappa beta was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). Low frequency PEMFs intervention for 14 days has a good preventive effect on osteoporosis.
