Status and prospects of tight gas exploration and development in the Ordos Basin

Abstract

Tight gas of the Ordos Basin is mainly distributed in the Upper Paleozoic Permo-Carboniferous source rocks, tight gas resources reaching 10.37×1012 m3,among which natural gas resources occupy 68 %. Since 1995, five large gas fields have been developed and proved in Ordos Basin, Mizhi, Wushenqi,Daniudi, Shenmu and Sulige, in which accumulation reserves of tight gas reached 3. 78×1012 m . At present, the field has now entered a stage of rapid growth of reserves production. The average annual increase of reserves is more than 5 000 x 108 m3 in the past five years, and the average annual increase of tight gas production is 30×108 m3. A tight gas production base was established, taking Sulige gas field as the representation. Key technologies of tight gas exploration and development were integrated innovated around full digital seismic, optimization of drilling, reservoir reconstruction , downhole choke, draining gas exploitation technology and digital management. The mode of development was changed to form a mode of dense gas field development by focusing on " standardized design, modular construction, digital management, market-oriented operation". In 2011, the production of Sulige gas field reached 137 x 108 m3, which has made a contribution to improving the gas supply conditions for key cities such as Beijing,Shanghai, Xi' an, Yinchuan etc. Multiple-discipline comprehensive research shows that the south part of Sulige gas field, Jingbian-Caoqiao and Shenmu-Mizhi areas are the impartant fields for future exploration of tight gas and increasing reserves and productions. By 2015 as expectation,the accumulated reserves would increase up to totally over4.5 x 1012 m3 of tight gas and 255×08 m3 of tight gas would be produced in Sulige area.
