Abstract

A new combined technology, named UV-Freezing-Heating (UVFH), was applied in hemp degumming. The effects of hydrogen peroxide concentration, sodium hydroxide concentration, UV -radiation time, frozen temperature and heating temperature on the residual gum content were discussed. The morphology and structural change of hemp fiber after being degummed were characterized by Scan Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectrum (FT-IR). The results indicated that the low residual gum content of 2.95% and residual lignin of 0.75% were obtained under hydrogen peroxide concentration of 12 g/L, sodium hydroxide concentration of 12 g/L, UV-radiation time of 40 min, freezing temperature of -55℃ and heating temperature of 120℃.
