Abstract

The process of oil recovery with horizontal wells is a coupling process of reservoir flow and wellbore variable-mass flow. The influence of reservoir heterogeneity cannot be ignored. A fully coupled reservoir/wellbore model for horizontal wells in heterogeneous, anisotropic reservoirs is developed. The heterogeneous permeability field is represented by a homogenous permeability field of equivalent permeability with a heterogeneity skin varying along the well. On this basis, the solution for the reservoir flow model is obtained by source function method and superposition principles. The solution methodology based on model discretization is presented. The inflow performance of horizontal wells in heterogeneous reservoirs is studied. Permeability heterogeneity has a great impact on flux profile and productivity of horizontal wells. The flux distribution along the well is basically the same as the near-permeability distribution. The flux in high permeability zone is bigger than that in low-permeability zone. Equivalent permeability being the same, with the increase of near-well heterogeneity, the average productivity of horizontal wells decreases, while the average unbalance of flux distribution increases. This study provides a theoretical basis for the productivity prediction and completion optimization of horizontal wells in heterogeneous, anisotropic reservoirs.
