Clinical Observation on Long-term Efficiency of Montelukast Sodium in the Treatment of Bronchiolitis

Abstract
Objective; To observe the long-term efficiency of montelukast sodium in the treatment of bronchiolitis. Methods; Seventy infants with bronchiolitis from January 2006 to March 2009 were randomly divided into three groups. Control group (n=27) was given the conventional therapy. On the basis of the conventional therapy, patients in montelukast sodium short-term group ( n = 23 ) were administered with montelukast sodium for 7 days from the first 24 h after admission, patients in long-term group (n = 20) were administered with the same dosage as the short-term group for 3 months. Then study the differences of recurrent wheezing after 3 months, recurrent wheezing after 12 months and the progress of asthma after 3 years in the three groups. Meanwhile, detect the levels of serum interleukin-4(IL-4 )and IFN-γ in three groups pre- and post-treatment. Results: The long-term clinical effect in long-term group was better than that in short-term group and control group. The differences were statically significant (P<0.05), but the differences between short-term group and control group were not statically significant (P>0.05). The serum IL-4 in three groups were significantly decreased after 3 months treatment. The serum lFN-γ in three groups were decreased after 3 months treatment. The differences were statically significant in long-term group (P<0. 05), but the differences in short-term group and control group were not statically significant (P>0. 05). Conclusions: The effect of long-term therapy of montelukast sodium after acute stage of bronchiolitis was absolutely significant in improving host defenses, and it was helpful to reduce recurrent wheezing and proportion of developing into asthma.关键词
