Abstract

The removal efficiency and mechanism of di-butyl phthalate (DBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in laboratory scale combined landfill leachate biotreatment process (UASB (Up-flow Anaero- bic Sludge Bed) + BAF (Biological Aerated Filter) + ANO (Anoxic) + MBR (Membrane bioreactor) ) were studied. The influent concentrations of DBP and DEHP were 164.4 μg/L and 215.0μg/L, respectively, which were reduced to 11.8 p.g/L and 10.4 μg/L, respectively in the effluent, and their removal rates were up to 92.9% and 95.2% , respectively. DBP could be gradually removed during the combined process, and the prin- ciple mechanism should be the degradation by microorganism. MBR was the major process to remove DEHP, in which the removal efficiency was 56.6% mostly owing to the effect of membrane retention. The suggested com- bined biotreatment process was efficient in simultaneous removal of DBP and DEHP in landfill leachate.
