Abstract

Activated carbon prepared from furfural residue. Then the modification was carried out using sulfur dichloride reflux boiling and microwave roasting. The differences of surface functional groups before and after modification were analyzed through Boehm titration, pore size distribution and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results of Boehm titration showed that total acidity and the number of carboxyl and lactone increased after modification. The new peaks between 700 - 500 cm' in FT-IR spectra indicated that S-S, C-S bonds appeared on the surface of modified activated carbon. Pore size distribution showed that the microporous of activated carbon were developed after modification. This paper also studied the adsorption capacity of Hg2+ ion by modified activated carbon under different conditions such as varied concentrations, adsorption time and pH value. The final results showed that under the condition of Hg2+ 1-6 mg/L, adsorption time 180 min, and pH value 6-7, 25℃, S2C12 modified activated carbon(2.5 g carbon, 1 L solution), the removal rate of Hg was more than 93 %.
