Prevalence of mild cognitive impairment among the elderly in community

Abstract
Objective To investigate the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and the related factors among the elderly people in community. Methods From April to July 2011, a random cluster sampling survey was carried out to investigate the elderly aged ≥=60 years living in one community of Huangpu District. The survey was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, an interview to the subjects was performed by trained interviewers for a general questionnaire survey and rating scale including Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). In the second stage, for the subjects with distinct cognitive impairment or dysmnesia and those with the scores less than the cut-off point of MMSE, which the tests included physical examination, Global Deterioration Scale (GDS), Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), Hachinski Ischemic Scale (HIS), Geriatric Depression Scale, and neurological examination were conducted. Then MCI was diagnosed by the consensus of two psychiatrists. The data were analyzed and compared. Results A total of 300 subjects (127 males and 173 females) were surveyed. 67 (22.3%) subjects were diagnosed with MCI. The prevalence of MCI were significantly different among the subjects in sex, different age, education, sports, tea drinking and occupation (P<0.01). Conclusion Female, older age, low education, less physical exercise may increase the incidence of MCI among the elderly.关键词
