Abstract

By using the Plackett-Burman design, the Box-Benhnken design and the response optimizer in the Minitab software to design and optimize the styrene-acrylate emulsion synthesis experiments , the influence factors on the synthesis are analyzed and the optimal synthesis scheme is obtained. The Plackett-Burman is applied to conduct the experiment. By analyzing the experimental data, the dosages of emulsifiers, initiators and functional monomers are obtained as the three main influence factors on the styrene-acrylate copolymer emulsion performance. The Box-Benhnken is used to design the experiment and the experimental data are optimized by the response optimizer to get the optimal synthesis scheme: the monomer mass ratio of styrene to butyl acrylic is 1 :1, the rotate speed is 220 r/min, the reaction temperature is 75 t , and the mass percentages of emulsifiers, functional monomers and initiators are 1. 04% , 1. 85% and 0. 47% respectively. The synthetized styrene-acrylate emulsion is mixed with the anionic starch as surface sizing agent to size the copy base pape, and the average Cobb value of sized paper is 22. 6 g/m2. The experimental results show that styrene-acrylate copolymer emulsion synthesized under the Minitab optimized scheme gives the best sizing efficiency, and the agreement of the average experimental results and the predicted value for performances reaches 98. 26% - 98. 72% .
