Abstract

In order to evaluate the toxic effects of PCBs on zooplankton, the acute and chronic toxicities of PCB153 and PCB28 were assessed by using Daphnia magna as a tested organism in our study. The results showed that the 48 h-LCg, values of PCB28 and PCB,153 were 27.08 u-g'L"1 and 579.16 μg·L-1, respectively, which indicated that PCB153 was more toxic than fCB153. In the chronic toxic experiment, adverse effects were found both in the growth and reproduction of D. magna when exposed to PCBa and PCB153. The inhibition effects of PCBM on growth and reproduction were enhanced with increasing concentration. The inhibition effect of PCB,53 on growth was enhanced with increasing concentration. However, different performance upon the reproduction of D. magna was exhibited, with inhibition effect at low concentration and promotion effect at high concentration. In the environmental and ecological security study, high attention to PCBs(PCB153, PCB28) should be paid in their potential toxicity of low concentrations of long-term exposure and the acute toxicity of high concentrations.
