Abstract

Na+/H+ antiporters have been well documented to enhance plant salt tolerance by regulating cellular ion homeostasis. In order to reveal the function of BvNHXl from Beta vulgaris in plant salt resistance, the plant expression vector pROK H - BvNHXl was constructed and introduced into Arabidopsis thaliana, Transformants were selected for their ability to grow on a medium containing kanamycin. Southern blot analyses confirmed lhat BvNHXl was transferred into the Arabidopsk thaliana genome and northern blot analyses showed that BvNHXl was expressed in the transformants. Several transgenic homozygous lines and wild - type plants were evaluated for salt tolerance, the results suggest that transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants expressing BvNHXl improved seed germination rate and salt tolerance in seedlings. Under saline conditions, both fresh and dry weights of the trans-genics as well as their accumulations of Na + and + were much higher than that of wild - type. These results demonstrate that overexpression of BvNHXl in Arabidopsis thaliana increased salt tolerance of transgenic plants compared with the wild - type plants.
