Abstract

High brightness lighting emitting diode (HB-LED) has attracted a lot of attention from both industry and academic for its high efficacy, simple to drive, environmentally friendly, long lifespan and small size. Typically, the power supply for LED requires high power density in addition to high efficiency, high power factor and low cost. The size of electrolytic capacitor used as storage capacitor is usually large, but also it has the key drawback with short lifespan. These hamper the improvement on LED lighting products. This paper presents a new proposal of LED lamp driver using the SEPIC-derived converter as PFC pre-regulator with twin-bus output. The SEPIC-derived break the low frequency power loop of the conventional SEPIC converter; therefore SEPIC-derived do not need the large capacity output capacitor to meet the output voltage ripple requirement. The basic operating principle and analysis is introduced in detail. A prototype of a 50W SEPIC-derived has been built and tested to verify the feasibility of the proposed LED lamp driver. The experimental results show that the efficiency is exceeding 92% and power factor is not less than 0.96.
