Abstract

This study was carried out to supply a new option for resource utilization of excess activated sludge in urban wastewater treatment plants by making disposable biodegradable material. The excess activated sludge was acclimated for 10 d by SBR systems, and then 4.0 g/L of sodium acetate was added as the precursor for polyhydoxyalkanoates (PHA) accumulation in the acclimated sludge, with aerobic fermentation at 30~C for 10 h. The maximum yield of PHA was 1 125 mg/L, accounting for 35.7% of the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS). After centrifugation, drying and mixing, the sludge was molded into disposable biodegradable materi- als such as disposable flowerpot. To optimize the formula of the biodegradable material, orthogonal experiment was conducted. The results showed that the optimum ratios of raw materials were 57% of dry sludge, 20% of straw fiber, PVA 19% , 2% of barium stearate and 2% of CaO, respectively. The results also indicated that the optimum condition was 100~C and heating of 1.5 h, then the product had the best compressive strength and ten- sile strength. Meanwhile, no virus was detected in the product. The heavy metal of flowerpot could also meet the requirements of national standard in agricultural sludge. The biodegradable property of the flowerpot was also ac- cordant with the requirement of biodegradable materials. Therefore, disposable biodegradable flowerpot in this study was valuable in advanced development and application.
